Sheridan College

Introducing Programming Genius Patrick McKenna

A while back we gave a big THANK YOU shout out to all the behind the scenes members of the Nexed team- all the fine folks who help us tend to the various pots we have a boilin’. Well, we’d like to bring one of them out to center stage and introduce you to him properly—.Patrick McKenna “ our software programmer and developer extraordinaire! (let’s hope he doesn’t get all shy and awkward-y).

We first met Patrick in the Fall of 2012 when we began working with Sheridan College in Oakville on adding specific game zones and further building upon various other elements of Answerables. He was the project lead and head programmer guiding a team of graduate students as they worked through their various tasks. We immediately picked up on Patrick’s programming skills and ability to lead the team through the various pitfalls and unknowns that pop up in a project with a scope such as ours. But as the months went on and we extended our collaboration with Sheridan into the new year, we began to realize that Patrick had become a crucial  member not only of the Sheridan project, but also of Nexed. In our last few days of sprint towards the release of Answerables v.1 to the beta testers and focus group-ers, Patrick put his head down and went above and beyond to help us get it done.

And it was then that we knew—this one’s a keeper!

So, Nexed-ers…proud to introduce you to Patrick McKenna.

Sheridan College students aboard the Nexed covered wagon

As promised, we want to keep you up to date not only with the latest and greatest in juicy edtech tidbits for 21st century educators and parents, but also on the progress of Answerables, as it emerges from its embryonic state.

Many of you may have noticed the Sheridan College logo at bottom of the Sneak Peek page about Answerables at nexed.com. We have been working closely with an awesome group of post-graduate students since September. This project was initially funded by FedDev and has focused mainly on the creation of the first integrated gaming ‘Zone.’

We’ve met so many talented folks at Sheridan and they’ve jumped fully on to the Nexed covered wagon lighting out for territories unknown. A big shout-out and high-five to these fine people: Patrick McKenna (project lead), Will Barry, Jeston Silveira, Harsha Chandriani, Selm Pitcher, Young kyu Han, Huy Tran, and Varian Singh.

A week ago, we had a major ‘meeting of the minds’ bringing in both our data base architect and ‘dashboard’ guru for a marathon brainstorming session about connecting all the pieces of this puzzle together to prepare for beta launch in January.

Terrific ideas were brought to the table, things began to pivot, and before we knew it, not only had a couple major changes for the better been suggested, but there was also talk of Answerables going MOBILE. Exciting times indeed!

Stay tuned—MUCH more on this to come!!

It takes a creative posse to get to the Nexed level

Before we talk about where we’ll be heading as we gear up to launch our Beta version of Answerables, we’d like to take a look back and recognize all the great teams that helped get us here!

Our AMAZING and AWARD-winning Branding and Marketing team at Premise Design Communications in Toronto, who developed the Nexed brand from the ground up and came up with our hot off the presses Answerables logo.

Our Website and Answerables Dashboard developers at Ninesides in Toronto, who had to dive deep into their bag of tricks to bring us to life on the World Wide Web AND get our Dashboard working its magic.

Both Premise and Ninesides have also been working closely with the marketing genius of Toronto-based Anna Withrow, who’s ability to keep all our plates a’ spinning continues to astound!

Our team at Reaction Grid out of sunny Florida, who got this all kickstarted with their work for us using Jibe, their own 3D virtual world platform that Answerables is built upon.

The gang at Sheridan College in Oakville, a tremendously talented group of post graduate students, who took on the monumental task of creating our first fully integrated game ‘Zone.’ More on this to come in the very near future “ don’t want to spoil the surprise!

And last, but not least, our Canadian government funders and supporters IRAP and FEDDEV and the Will Unicorn Foundation who all believed that Nexed was worth investing in!
